May 11 2017 8:44PM

Welcome to another summer of baseball. McKay Club has continued to get younger and more dedicated players with the hopes that experience will help all of our players if they're still involved in NCAA baseball at the collegiate level mixed in with some veterans. Wishing all the success to all of our players. A big thank you once again to our franchise owner Uncle Buck - Mr. President - Dave McKay

Poor Night Out for Beacons

May 22 2008 1:37AM

It seemed like a bad night right from the beginning.

FLAT! That is the word for it. Jon Pellettier was on the mound for his first YBL game. The 19 year old from Quincy was pumped and pitched very well thru 4.1 innings. He did not allow a hit until the bottom of the 4th. But, that was his undoing. After that hit - 2 runs would score after some funky play afield. Jon hung on and shut the door and lasted into the 5th -- but was removed with one out and one on in that stanza.

The flood gates opened when Ryan Thomas came to the mound. Thomas was rusty at best. He was not helped by sloppy play either. 5 more runs came across and Cambridge seemed to be on its way to a sure win.

But this 2008 McKay Club refused to quit. They scored a single run in the 6th and were able to plate 3 more in the 7th. That was not enough. The grave was too deep. The first loss of '08 was a tough one to swallow.

Many mental mistakes. Batters out of sink and some base running errors took us out of "innings".

So, its forget about this one and move on to Friday. Good job Big Baby! Nice work -- 7 K's and no earned runs in your first YBL start! Too bad -- we let ya down!!

McKay Club Returns Home to Ross Field

May 21 2008 12:31PM

Ross Field in Hyde Park holds many fond memories for the McKay Club. It was here that 25 years ago this spring that the Mill Stream Shamrocks entered the "old" Junior Park League. A league -- that would be renamed in 1990 - Thomas A. Yawkey Baseball League.

The Beacons play Cambridge Spinners to complete their 2008 season series tonight at Ross. McKay Club behind Adam Kulis won game 2 of the season 8-2 last week over Cambridge. Game time tonight is 7:30PM.

No one remains from that first roster:

Tim Mahoney - C; Dick Sexton - P/SS/1B; Brian Yanovitch - OF; Randy Dillon - 3B; Mike Kazmouski - OF; John Pagel - P/SS; Tom Collins - P; Ronnie Piers - 2B; Sean O'Sullivan -1B/DH/C have all gone on to private lives. They are raising families now. It was fun bringing a new young team into the JPL in 1984. We faced many challenges and had tremendous team. We NEVER missed the play offs until 1991!

Many of the current players on the '08 roster were not close to being born when the team was founded!

2008 has many direct links to that first season. The Beacons are very young and NEW. Only 7 members of the 2007 roster remain. Many of the players are under 21 years of age - in fact the average age is 22.6 years of age.

18 year old - Nick O'Keefe garnered the first Beacon win of 2008. It was 19 year old John Pagel, who was on the bump way back in the first Mill Stream game. Pagel will be inducted into the YBL Hall of Fame this June after a 24 year career.

Quincy Native - "Big Baby", Jon Pellettier will be leading the Beacons this evening at Ross. Jon is only 19. He will be pitching in his first YBL game.

Much water has passed under the bridges during 25 years. 3 Championship Final visits and many near misses. Ohh -- those many misses! The "brides-maides" of the JPL/YBL of the '80's & '90's -- The McKay Club has stood the test of time and remains one of the most solid franchise in the league.

So its off to game three of the season. It is hoped -- off to Win # 3 of 2008 at our Old Home Field -- Ross Field in Hyde Park!

Beacons Drizzled Out Sinday Game PPD

May 18 2008 9:16PM

Poor field conditions and a drizzly rain on Sunday, May 16th cased League Officials to PPD the game between the Chelsea Cyclones and the McKay Club Beacons at Ronan Park.

The game scheduled to begin at 7PM will be rescheduled to a later date. Hold onto your tickets - they are valuable for readmission to beautiful Ronan!

Big Baby, Jon Pellitier will handle another aassignment for the Beacons next week. The rookie was chomping at the bit to take the bump in his YBL debut.

Big Baby on the Bump Against Cyclones Sunday

May 16 2008 6:25PM

6ft 5in 220lb - 19 year old from Quincy, MA - Jon Pellettier AKA "Big Baby" will stride to the hill for his Yawkey League debut on Sunday against the renamed Chelsea Cyclones.

The Celtics have THEIR Big Baby -- Now the Beacons are proud to sport their own version. "Big Baby" was a top pitcher for the American Legion, Pierre Marquette Post in Quincy. The tall - soft spoken lad has done some damage at first base and at the plate thus far. He smashed a solid double in his very first YBL AB against Savin Hill on Monday - May 12th.

Jon is another of the young McKay Club additions, who will shock the YBL in 2008. Much is expected from this kid. He is very confident in himself and has a nice mix of pitches.
